The North Country National Scenic Trail winds through 95 miles of the Allegheny National Forest. The Red Bridge Section of The North Country Trail begins with expansive views of the Kinzua Creek Arm of Allegheny reservoir. Along the trail, there are fern beds, forest valleys, large rocks, dappled sunlight and an unexpected dark past.
There is a closer parking lot to the trailhead across this bridge and on the right. We didn't know that when we parked.
We love the lush ferns beds and greenery of the Allegheny National Forest.
Not too far into the hike, we came upon this box.
Inside, we found this journal which tells of a WWII POW camp along the trail. It's hard to imagine that a place filled with such peace and beauty was the former site of something the exact opposite of these things.
