Fort Clinch Drive
Amelia Island, FL
"May your trails be crooked,
winding, lonesome, dangerous,
leading to the most amazing view.
May your mountains rise into and above the clouds."
The road that leads from the entrance of Fort Clinch State Park to the fort is one of our favorite places to ride. The three-mile road twists and turns under canopies of large, old, live oaks. The branches of these beautiful trees are draped in Spanish Moss that sway in the ocean breezes over a road dappled with sunlight and shadows.
This shirt is supposed to say "love" but everyone thinks it says "loaf" so I got rid of it.
Along the way to the fort, you’ll pass 30-foot sand dunes, a scenic overlook and lighthouse, and wildlife. There are dirt trails for mountain biking along side the road, but we like to ride on the road.
Pedal straight to the fort, or take the road to beach. Along the way, you’ll also pass the entrances to the Atlantic Beach Campground (see our post under Stay) and the Amelia River Campground.
Bike rentals are available at the fort.
This is one of those places that becomes a part of you. You take a bit of its peace with you when you go, and you leave a bit of your heart there, too. It's good to have places like that.
